What is Supermatrix S?
Supermatrix S is a new range of magnesia-carbon bricks that are formulated with an enhanced matrix additive package.
- This improved matrix has been designed to significantly improve corrosion resistance.
- This development also brings secondary benefits, such as improved resistance to oxidation, erosion and can also contribute to reducing susceptibility to thermo-mechanical cracking.

Improving corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance
and reducing susceptibility to thermo-mechanical cracking
- Supermatrix S is formulated to optimise the brick matrix additions to enhance slag anti-wetting characteristics.
- The combination of a modified distribution of magnesia size fractions and a careful selection of carbon additions result in products with a more uniform matrix and an overall tighter microstructure.
- This results in improved corrosion, oxidation resistance and helps reducing thermo-mechanical cracking`.
The matrix additions in Supermatrix S lower the expansion characteristics which can help reduce thermo-mechanical stresses and susceptibility to cracking

A tighter microstructure
Standard grade
- Coarse MgO fractions expand into the matrix on heating but then shrink away on cooling breaking the carbon bond and creating channel porosity.
- Coarse particles will be susceptible to washing out into the slag as the matrix wears back increasing the rate of wear.

Supermatrix S grade
- The MgO and graphite size distribution in Supermatrix S is formulated to offer a tighter microstructure optimising the pore size distribution and reducing channel porosity formation.
- This results in improved slag resistance and less wash-out of MgO aggregates into the slag.

Proven effects on customers
Supermatrix S shows a better performance than equivalent parent’s formulation by ~10%
