PAHs are ubiquitous in the environment.
Health Effects
PAHs generally have a low degree of acute toxicity to humans.
Increased incidences of lung, skin, and bladder cancers are associated with occupational exposure to PAHs.
Studies show that PAHs affect the hematopoietic (blood formation), immune, reproductive, and neurologic systems and cause developmental effects.
Environmental Effects
Most PAHs in the environment are from man-made processes.
PAHs are found in industries that produce or use coal tar, coke, or bitumen (asphalt).
PAHs mostly accumulate in soils.
OSHA’s permissible exposure limit (PEL) for PAH in the workplace is 0.2 mg/m³ for benzene-soluble coal tar pitch fraction of air (8-hour time weighted average).
OSHA requires workers to be trained in the proper use of appropriate PPE and safety.
Workers must receive medical surveillance if exposed above the PEL.
EPA’s maximum contaminant level (MCL) for PAH in drinking water is 0.2 ppb.
Coal tar pitch containing substances have been banned in Canada and Europe.
As with most hazardous substances, regulations are likely to further limit the human and environmental exposure to PAHs.
