Potline consists of 100 to 400 electrolytic cells, commonly called pots, where a continuous feed of aluminium oxide is mixed with fluxes. Electricity is used to pull pure Aluminium metal out of the solution. The smelted Aluminium is drawn off the pot floors using a siphon and is delivered to the next process step. Refractory linings for pots need to withstand chemical reaction from the fluxes, resist high temperatures and remain unaffected by the Aluminium.
